Background: Lydia's parents are not of this earth (with more details to come). They came to earth before Lydia was ever born, though, hiding in human society and trying to blend in. When Lydia was born, they did their best to hide their (and her) history from her, viewing it as for her protection. This did not, however, stop certain things from having an effect on her.
When she was in elementary school, she began fearing a creature that she believed to be hiding under her bed. While her parents were convinced that it was her imagination (or, at least, hoped that it was), she knew it was real and it started having ill effects on her young psyche. Eventually, she had created a make-believe friend who strove to protect her. While this pretend friend was, in fact, imaginary, it also served as an outlet for her inherent power to protect her. Eventually, though, she told the wrong people at school about her make-believe friend and the monster under her bed. Diagnosing her as schizophrenic, the people in charge started various treatments to try and "cure" her, including medication. Unable to do anything without drawing attention to what they and their daughter really were, the Monroe's were stuck.
Then, one night, everything changed. By this time, Lydia was in middle school and fairly messed up, but the creature under the bed made the mistake of being seen by her parents. The only thing she remembers from that night was her parents scaring away the bad man. The next day, they had the house up for sale and were moving to the incredibly small Henlopen Acres, Delaware. In the new house, things returned to normal for the most part; the voices went away, no more bad men under the bed, and she was able to start excelling in school. The damage done during those formative years would stay with her, though. She developed Borderline Dissociative Identity Disorder. Up until recently, she had appeared to be functioning quite normally except for the occasional anxiety attack. The true events of her childhood, of which she could recall very little, were foggy to her and seemed more like a mostly forgotten nightmare.
Then she went to work for CREST and was put on the mass manipulation suit project. No one else had any success whatsoever in making the stolen blueprints work until she came along, and her success is now for obvious reasons. When she overheard their nefarious plans, however, and was institutionalized, which put a hairline fracture in the bubble her psyche had created to protect her from the events of her past. The encounters she has had as a part of the Retribution team created a spider web of cracks along that fracture. The knowledge she gained about her true heritage, along with temporarily getting Princess as a new "make-believe friend" has blown a hole in the bubble protecting her. Now she must work to once again come back from the brink and find her new place in the world. She moved in with her parents, briefly, until a job offer from Amalgam Materials was the second chance she needed.
