Background: The man known as John Doe used to be a mechanic in the US Army until he was recruited into Project: New Moon and given bionic implants with the capability to tap into the Boost technology used by the Blasters. The problems truly began, though, when New Moon was discovered and shut down. As John was trying to escape, he accessed the Boost, which gave him amnesia and severed his connection. He made his way to the DC Defenders where he actively worked to regain access to the Boost. He eventually succeeded, but it drew Hero's Death (now known as Virus) to him and was killed by the villain.
John's corpse found its way into Necron's possession, where the villain did more experiments on the body and eventually brought him back to life. But, instead of him being a brainless monster, he retains his free will and escaped, eventually meeting up with Balatar's group and joining them. Through his exploits with them, he learned bits of his own history and was able to reconnect with his wife and daughter.
John Doe was created and designed by Jim Caswell and transformed into Half-Life to be played by Anthony Eppard.
