Known Background: When Zhilan was of marrying age, a mysterious man from the mountains came down to find a bride. When he came to their home, he immediately fell in love with Zhilan's younger sister. When their parents insisted that, per tradition, Zhilan must be married first, the man arranged for her to be banished instead and took the younger sister as his wife. Afraid of what would happen to their eldest daughter on her own, but unable to fight the man's influence, they sent their son to go with her. Within days, the two Wu children found themselves on a boat bound for the United States.
Once in America, Zhilan's brother made a life for himself, finding a job, a wife and building a family while she allowed the bitterness of what happened to her to fester and turned to the dark arts (which, ironically, would have made her a perfect mate for the mystery man), becoming The Ghost Empress; a sorceress and triad leader who was a frequent opponent of the Blue Falcon and Tiger back in late 1920's and early 1930's. After years of battle, she was attempting a ritual to gain more power when it was interrupted by the aforementioned heroes, and she was killed.
Her ghost was trapped in limbo for many years, but she eventually managed to manifest on the mortal plane. Recently, she attempted to get revenge on Blue Falcon and Tiger by raising them as Jiang Shi, but she was stopped by the efforts of the Frisco Freax. She ran San Francisco's triad operations with the help of her brother's grandson as their head until her battles with the Pacific Coast Paranormals came to a head. She was defeated and taken to a higher plane of existence by Enigma, avoiding her destined return to Der Nacht in the process. While her obsession was not resolved, the place she was destined for didn't care.
