After the Phoenix Syndicate was broken up by the Champions of Justice and their allies, many of the members rejoined their previous alliances, or formed new ones. Several of them, believing in the syndicate's message of rebirth, decided that they should be reborn. Hence, under the leadership of Bart Matthews, they became Firebird.
