Shin-Ra was an alternate dimension that was overrun with monsters and demons. The leader of the people used magic to infuse one of their residents with strength and speed from the monsters themselves, giving him the power to fight and defeat them. Once he has apparently perged the dimension of the creatures, though, the leader who had created him exiled him to another dimension (Earth-K).
