Accident - The rodents of unusual size were an experiment that went wrong. Experiment Y-1453 - a growth hormone that was accidentally introduced to a rice crop through the water supply in New Orleans - was devoured by rats in a local school, causing them to grow exponentially. The actual intent of the experiment and how it ended up in the water is unknown.
